Midrasha

A Space for Jewish Teens to Learn, Question, and Connect

Midrasha, our Hebrew High program for 8th through 12th graders, is a welcoming and dynamic space where Jewish teens from across Ithaca come together to explore, question, and engage with Jewish learning. Meeting Tuesdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, each session begins with a communal meal before diving into the week’s topic.

Rooted in Torah Lishmah — learning for the sake of learning — Midrasha empowers teens to wrestle with Jewish ideas, texts, and traditions in a way that feels personal and relevant. Together, we tackle real and challenging questions, such as:

  • What does it mean to be Jewish in the 21st century?

  • How do Jewish values shape my understanding of gender, disability, justice, or world events?

  • Is there a place for me in Jewish tradition? How do I define my Jewish identity?

  • What does it mean to be a “text person,” and what does a righteous person look like?

Each session is designed to foster critical thinking, open discussion, and genuine curiosity as teens navigate their Jewish identities in an increasingly complex and pluralistic world. But Midrasha is more than just a learning experience—it’s a vibrant community! Our Tuesday night gatherings create a space where teens can connect with Jewish peers, form lasting friendships, and find support as they grow into young adulthood. The shared meals, deep conversations, and engaging classes make Midrasha a highlight of the week for many of our students.

As a core part of Temple Beth-El’s teen program, Midrasha is open to all Jewish teens in Ithaca, regardless of synagogue affiliation. Whether you’ve been part of Jewish learning programs for years or are just starting to explore, you are welcome here. Come be part of the conversation – and our community!
